Inspirations

     Zohran Mamdani

    • Was in his early 30s when he announced his intention to run for mayor of New York City. I happen to also be in this demographic

    • Was also a student council kid

    • We both fall under the same quadrant on Political Compass (Left-Libertarian)

    • We are both of South Asian descent and his work has inspired me to run for office

    Barack Obama

    • The first person of color to be elected as the President of the United States of America

    • Both decided to pursue our J.D at one of the top law schools in our countries after some gap years between our undergraduate degree

    • Left law to pursue politics—our true passion

    Stephen Harper

    • Reduced the goods and services tax to 5%

    • Witnessed our strongest economy when our dollar was par with the US dollar

    • Introduced the Tax Free Savings Account

    • Reduced our budget deficit from $55.6 to $2.9 billion from 2009 to 2015

    • Although served as the leader of the opposing party, is able to side with what is right even in current day politics

    Rathika Sitsabaiesan

    • A woman of colour who started as a campaign manager then advisor to Jack Layton

    •  First Tamil to be elected to the House of Commons of Canada

    •  Recipient of The V. K. Krishna Menon Institute's Personality of the Year Award for her ability to represent her constituency without racial and creed prejudices

    • The award was also conferred on her for her untiring efforts on human rights issues in Sri Lanka and opposing the persecution of Tamil minorities in Sri Lanka

    • Was also involved in student politics at a post-secondary level

    Rob Ford – The Mayor and Councillor

    • Campaigned on reigning in government spending, cutting the vehicle registration tax, and reducing waste at City Hall

    • Earned a reputation for passionate speeches. Argued against spending money on the suicide prevention barrier and spending it instead on rounding up child molesters "who are the main cause of people jumping off bridges".

    • Proposed a cut to each councillor's $200,000 office budget, money for travel to conferences, ending city limousine usage and club memberships. "if we wiped out the perks for council members, we'd save $100 million easy."

    • Made a point of not using his allotted city budget for his office expenses, paying for the expenses from his salary. He claimed $10 for his first year, and $4 for his second year.

    • "We just need to get rid of these lifelong politicians that just give out money to special interest groups and don't serve the community. I'm really teed off. We need to get a new council or this city is going to go down the drain." I can strongly relate to this statement.

    • Made a priority of responding to local constituents' problems, often returning calls himself or meeting with city staff to resolve problems.

    • Accountable: spoke out against the city donating CA$1.5 million to help prevent AIDS, arguing that most taxpayers should not be concerned with AIDS. Later publicly apologized for the comments

    • Spoke out against cyclists sharing roads with motorists, which were "built for buses, cars, and trucks, not for people on bikes
